HVO – An Effective Heating Solution for Older Buildings

Posted On: 22 May 2024

Did you know that there over a million homes heating with oil fired heating in Great Britain, most of these, around 900,000 are to be found in England & Wales? Most of these oil-fired heating systems are found in rural areas but interestingly there are still several thousand to be found in Greater London! It may not come as surprise that the county with the most oil heating systems is Norfolk, quickly followed in numbers by Suffolk and Lincolnshire. Almost half of all properties equipped with an oil heating system were built before 1919, these mainly rural properties represent the heart of countryside living and represent an important part of the UK’s cultural heritage. Most of these properties rely on high energy on-demand heating systems to keep its residents warm. In a fossil free fuel future these homes can be heated using HVO or other high energy renewable fuels such as is produced by Neste in Europe. Most existing oil boilers and tanks can be easily adapted to use HVO reducing disruption for residents while providing an effective heating solution for these older buildings.
