4 Important Ways to Protect your Oil Tank

Posted On: 18 January 2018

Great news for homeowners using Home Heating Oil!

The latest figures show that on average Heating Oil has remained the cheapest form of heating for over 3 years. With an estimated 1.6 million homes in the UK using Heating Oil, this will be welcome news.

As a leading manufacturer of Bunded Oil Tanks within the UK and Ireland, we’ve created a helpful guide below which shows the 4 keys problems many homeowners face with oil storage and what you can do to protect your oil and tank against them.

Protecting Against…

Fuel Theft

There are a number of different things you can do to protect yourself from having oil stolen from your tank. A very low cost, but effective way is to use a padlock and lock the access point to your oil tank. To make it that bit more secure, install an alarmed padlock and ‘This tank is alarmed’ sticker on your oil tank.

Another way to deter thieves is to install the tank out of sight of roads and walkways. A great way to hide your oil tank is by installing an underground tank. Manufacturing the first every plastic Double Walled Underground Oil Tank, we now give homeowners the option to have an environmentally preferred underground oil storage tank. Finally, security lights or CCTV cameras are also excellent ways to stop and deter fuel theft attempts.

Bad Weather

Snow – After a heavy snowfall make sure to clear any snow on the top of your oil tank. The extra weight could potentially damage your tank.

Wind – After a period of high winds, always check around your tank for any debris and damage. If you live in a location with regular high winds, we would recommend our Low Profile Bunded Oil Tank be installed.

Rain – check the lids on your tank regularly to ensure they are securely closed, especially after a delivery. This will help prevent water getting into the bund or the inner storage tank which can be very problematic.

Splits and Leaks

Just like an Oil Boiler, it is advised to have your Oil Tank serviced once a year as it is a vital part of your heating system. The best time to do this would be in the summer in preparation for the winter months. You can also do your own checks on a weekly basis. Key things to check for are, cracks, bulges, leaks/drips, loose connections/fittings and corroded pipes. Ideally, the driver who delivers the product to your home should be able to give you advice on all of these aspects as he would be an expert. If he also is not able to help, contact a plumber/installer immediately to have your tank professionally inspected.

Running out of Oil

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare, running out of oil, especially in the evening or at night. The simplest way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to install a contents monitoring gauge. Gauges can be purchased with any Harlequin Oil Tank with three options available. The most basic option allows you to monitor your oil tank from the comfort of your own home.
